City of Sunderland’s Matt Wylie receives MBE at Buckingham Palace

On the 19th April 2017, City of Sunderland Swimmer Matt Wylie travelled to London to officially receive his MBE from Buckingham Palace.

Matt was awarded his MBE in the New Year’s Honours list in recognition of his services to swimming after claiming gold in the S9 50 metres Freestyle at the Paralympics in Rio. This victory saw him become the first British Paralympic medallist in the men’s S9 50m Freestyle since the modern classification system was introduced in 1992 after also becoming European and British Champion in the same event earlier in the season.

Matt received his MBE from the Duke of Cambridge along with his Rio 2016 teammates Bethany Firth, Michael Jones, Aaron Moores and Steph Slater.
