Early on Saturday morning, the Sunderland Aquatics Centre was busy with athletes from across Northumberland and Durham, training together as part of the Northumberland and Durham Performance programme. Over 50 athletes are part of the performance programme this season which has taken over from the old Swim England Beacon Programme. The Northumberland and Durham Performance programme is supported by the Northumberland and Durham Swimming Association and has 4 lead coaches and 6 assistant coaches.
The four swimming hubs within the county (Tyne and Wear, Tees Valley, Durham and Northumberland) now form part of the Northumberland and Durham Development programme, which the Performance Programme is also part of. The Development Programme aims to provide additional training opportunities for athletes within Northumberland and Durham in addition to that which they are receiving within their home programmes.
The hubs now have regular access to the 50 metre facility in Sunderland, as well as the underwater camera system and support from experienced coaches. Any level of coach is welcome to attend the sessions on a Saturday morning to gain coaching experience.
Selection criteria for the 2017 – 2018 Performance programme can be found here: NDSA Swimming Development Programme 2017 – 2018 Performance Sessions Selection Criteria.
