North East Swimmers at Swim England Winter Championships 2017

Once again, swimmers and coaches from the North East have travelled to Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the Swim England Winter Championships.

Day 1 – 13th December 2017

In the first final of the championships, City of Sheffield’s Eleanor Faulkner lowered her personal best to take gold in the Women’s 200m Freestyle. This was followed by a New British Age Group record in the 100m Backstroke by Newcastle Swim Teams Nicholas Pyle who swam 54.95 to break his own British record seat earlier in the heats to take 5th in the A final.

The next couple of events saw North East swimmers claiming a number of Silver medals; Sheffield’s Rosie Rudin in the Women’s 400m IM, City of Leeds Rebecca Clynes in the Junior Women’s 50m Breaststroke and Tynemouth’s Will Morris in the Junior Men’s 50m Butterfly. Rosie’s swim in 400m IM was under the qualifying time for Gold Coast selection in this event. In the Men’s 400m Freestyle, City of Sheffield’s Samuel Budd took Bronze while Newcastle Swim Team’s Ciaran Thomas also claimed Bronze in the Men’s Junior Age Group, also claimed Bronze.

Commenting on her performance in the 200m,  Ellie Faulkner said: “To be honest, I’m in complete shock [at getting the PB]. I’m only partially rested for this meet because I’ve already qualified so for me it was about racing hard and training hard at the same time. Coming out with a PB was a shock, but I feel like I have got much more to come and hope I can bring it out at the Gold Coast.”

Day 2 – 14th December 2017

The second day of competition saw medals for swimmers from swimmers from across the North East.

In the Men’s 200m Freestyle City of Sheffield’s Nicholas Grainger claimed Silver while his team mate Jay Lelliott took Bronze. City of Sunderland’s Freya Rayner claimed bronze in the Women’s 50m Freestyle followed by City of Sheffield’s Joe Litchfield who won the Gold in the Men’s 400m IM and City of Leeds Leah Crisp who took Bronze in the Women’s 800m Freestyle.

Day 3 – 15th December 2017

In the Men’s 200m Butterfly, City of Sheffield’s Reuben Visda took Silver in the Junior Age Group, in the Men’s 50m Backstroke, Newcastle Swim Team’s Nicholas Pyle took Silver in a new British Age Group record of 25.62 while his team mate Ciaran Thomas took Bronze in the Junior Men’s 1500m Freestyle.

Day 4 – 16th December 2017

City of Leeds Rebecca Cylnes claimed Gold in the Junior Women’s 200m IM and the Junior Womens 100m Breaststroke, Tynemouth’s Will Morris took Silver in the Junior Men’s 100m Butterfly while City of Sheffield’s Reuben Visda took Bronze. In the Women’s 100m Freestyle City of Sheffield’s Eleanor Faulkner also took Bronze.

Day 5 – 17th December 2017

City of Sheffield’s Joe Litchfield took Gold in the Men’s 200m IM, while in the 200m Butterfly, City of Leeds Ciara Schlosshan took Silver in the Open event while her team mate Charlotte Robinson took Silver in the Junior event. Newcastle Swim Team’s Phoebe Lenderyou took Bronze in the Women’s 50m Backstroke while Sheffield swimmers Eleanor Faulkner and Sapphira Gabbani (Junior) claimed Gold and Bronze in the Women’s 400m Freestyle.
