Yesterday, a team of 24 swimmers from Northumberland and Durham competed in the National County Team Championships in Sheffield. There were a range of eye-catching individual performances from the team who were competing within Division One, with 6 first place finishes.
Gateshead and Whickham’s Ryan Zhao picked up maximum points for the county in both the 100m Breaststroke and 100m Backstroke in the 12/13 years age group. Chester-Le-Street’s Thomas English took first in the boys 12/13 years 100 Freestyle while Tynemouth’s Will Morris took first and a new Northumberland and Durham Junior record of 56:87 in the 14/15 years 100 Butterfly. The Teams Captains from Newcastle Swim Team had great swims too with Emily Large claiming victory in the 16/17 years 100 Butterfly Fly while Nick Pyle clocked the second fastest short course time by a British 16-year old as he came home first in a personal best time of 54.23 in the 16/17 years 100m Backstroke. The results from all the swims within Division One can be found here: Division One Results 2017.
The county moved up 11 places from last year’s finishing position of 16th and were in the mix for a top three finish throughout the competition. There were some fantastic early season swims from many swimmers on the team with several personal best times being achieved. The mixture of swimmers from clubs within the county worked really well, especially within the relays where they supported each other and there were no disqualifications!
Many thanks to head coach Barbara Wilkinson (Loftus Dolphins) and assistant coach Chris Reekie (Tynemouth) for guiding and supporting the team throughout the weekend and to the Team Manager Howard Leighton (BOSSS) for ensuring everyone had a good nights sleep and that they got to where they needed to be, when they needed to be there.
