Success for North East Region Teams at Water Polo U14 Inter Regional Championships

Both the U14 girls and boys team produced good performances at the Inter Regional Championships which where held in Walsall in December.

Both teams won their respective groups but lost the final in some strongly contested matches. In the girls competition, a player of note was Anna Motley who was the top goal scorer in the girls event.

North East Coach Kevin Swainson has provided us with the following report on the boys match:

The 2004+ North East Boys Water Polo team played the Swim England Inter Regional’s tournament at Walsall’s Gala baths the weekend of the 9th and10 December 2017. All the players played with such determination and passion over the weekend, every single one of them gave 110% effort when it was asked of them and showed grit and determination at times when things were not going our way.

Their conduct over the weekend was exemplary and a credit to the region and their clubs and it was great to see how all the players from different clubs got on so well over the weekend.

The key to our success was our defence; defensively we were awesome all weekend. Our Centre back’s played excellent marking from the front preventing the ball getting to the oppositions Centre forward. This allowed us to play the high ball line press most of the time and putting their attacks under tremendous pressure. Ben Urquart who ended up winning the goal keeper of the tournament played excellent all weekend strengthening our defence even more and saved some tremendous 1 on 1’s to keep us in the running. MVP for the North East Steelers was Ryan-Jay Griffiths

We finished joint top with West Midlands the other team in the final on defence.
