From the 31st March to the 2nd April, a team of eight British divers, five of which were from the North East, travelled to Kazan in Russia to compete in the third leg of the 2017 FINA Diving World Series.
City of Leeds divers Daniel Goodfellow, Jack Laugher, Chris Mears, Katherine Torrance and Lois Toulson were joined by Tom Daley (Dive London), Tonia Couch (Plymouth Diving) and Grace Reid (Edinburgh Diving) to form a team that according to National Performance Director Alexei Evangulov were selected to feature a mixture of new and experienced World Series competitors and were in Russia with the aim of using the competition to build a strong foundation at the start of the Tokyo cycle.
The first day of the competitions saw medals across the board for the team. The Olympic Champions, Chris Mears and Jack Laugher secured their third 3m Synchro silver medal of the series. They were within the medal standings after the required dives and showed their strength to move into second position for the final two rounds. Saving their best two dives until last, they scored 91.26 points for their Front 2 1/2 Somersaults Triple Twists Piked and ended the competition with 87.78 points for their Front 4 1/2 Somersaults Tucked.
They won silver with a total score of 420.42. China's Cao Yuan and Xie Siyi won gold with a score of 458.82 with Ilia Zakharov and Evgenii Kuznetsov (Russia) taking bronze with 376.83.
In the 10m Syncho, the duo sat in a medal position after the first two rounds and continued to dive consistently to secure their third place finish. Their best dive was the Reverse 3 1/2 Somersaults Tucked which scored 80.58 points.
Their final score was 406.38 and Germany's Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein won silver with 408.54 and China's Aisen Chen and Hao Yang won gold after scoring 462.57.
The second day of the competition saw Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley win his first medal of the competition in the 10m Platform and he later teamed up with Grace Reid to win their first medal of the FINA/NVC Diving World Series.
Tom went into the final of the 10m Platform in second place and made his intent on the final known with his first dive. He scored 98.60 for his Reverse 3 1/2 Somersaults Tucked. He continued to dive consistently but finished with his second highest scoring dive of the competition with 95.40 points for his Back 3 1/2 Somersaults Piked. He won his third medal of the Series with his bronze after scoring 543.80 points. Aisen Chen (China) won gold with a score of 580.60 and Hao Yang (China) won silver with a total of 574.80 points.
Tom and Grace looked strong throughout the final of the Mixed 3m Synchro and secured a score of 96.00 points after their required dives. The pair secured their bronze medal with a score of 299.82 points with their best dive coming in the third round when they scored 69.30 points for their Inward 2 1/2 Somersaults Piked. China's Han Wang and Zheng Li won gold with a score of 322.50 with Canada's Jennifer Abel and Francois Imbeau-Dulac taking silver with 320.76 points.
