North East Medals at British Swimming Summer Championships

Swimmers from the North East have once again descended upon Sheffield this week for the 2017 British Swimming Summer Championships. The first couple of days swimming has seen some great performances from swimmers across all the age groups with many making finals and the podium.

Day 1 – 25th July 2017
Newcastle Swim Team’s Ciaran Thomas claimed the first medal of the meet for North East swimmers with bronze medal in the Men’s 15 years 400m Freestyle. This was followed by a Silver from City of Sheffield’s Samuel Budd in the Men’s 19 year age group.

City of Sheffield’s Alice Trickett was the first of the North East ladies to claim a medal with a Bronze in the Women’s 15 years 200m Freestyle. In the same event, City of Leeds Georgia Coates claimed Gold in the Women’s 17/18 years age group, with City of Sheffield’s Darcy Deakin taking Bronze while her team made Eleanor Faulkner took Gold in the 19 years age group.

In the Men’s 100 Breaststroke, York City’s Jason Robson claimed Silver in the 13/14 years age group, City of Leeds Jonathan Milner took Gold in the 16 years age group and York City’s Harry Devlin took Gold in the 17/18 years age group.

Newcastle Swim Team’s Madelaine Hardingham had a close race in the Women’s 13/14 years 400m IM claiming a Silver medal. In the 15 years age group, Kingston-Upon-Hull's Amy Corcoran claimed Silver while the 17/18 years age group ladies had a close race with City of Sheffield’s Amy Bell taking Gold just ahead of Borough of Stockton’s Niamh McDonagh. In the 19 years age group, City of Sheffield’s Amber Keegan claimed Silver.

In the Men’s 50m Backstroke, Chester-Le-Street’s Alex Mason claimed Gold in the 16 years age group while Newcastle Swim Team’s Nicholas Pyle took Gold in the 17/18 years age group. In the final event of the day, Loftus Dolphins Mia Hall took Gold in the Women’s 15 years 50m Breaststroke.

Day 2 – 26th July 2017
At the start of the finals session, in the women’s 800m Freestyle, City of Leeds Leah Crisp took Gold in the 16 years age group. Following this event, in the Men’s 200m Butterfly, City of Sheffield swimmers Reuben Visda took Silver (13/14 years), Samuel Salih took Silver (15 years) and Luke Howdle (19 years) took Gold in their respective age groups while Newcastle Swim Team’s Alfie Kelly and Adam Wilson took Gold and Silver in the 16 years age group.

City of Leeds Georgia Coates picked up her second Gold of the championships winning the Women’s 17/18 years 200m Breaststroke. In the Men’s 100m Backstroke, Derwentside’s Lewis Maxwell claimed Bronze in the 13/14 years age group, City of Sheffield’s Charlie Brown and Chester-Le-Streets Alex Mason took Gold and Silver in the 16 years age group while Newcastle Swim Teams Nicholas Pyle took Gold in the 17/18 years age group.

Newcastle Swim Team’s Emily Large took her first Gold of the Championships in the Women’s 16 years 50m Butterfly while City of Sheffield’s Kate Clifton took Silver in the 17/18 years age group. In the penultimate event of the evening, City of Leeds Jonathan Milner claimed Silver in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke.

Day 3 – 27th July 2017
There were a number of medals collected today by North East swimmers. In the Men’s 1500m Freestyle, Newcastle Swim Team’s Ciaran Thomas took Gold in the 15 years age group while his team mates Adam Wilson and Alfie Kelly took Gold and Silver respectively in the 16 years age group.

In the Men's 100m Freestyle, Skipton's Ned Sharp took Silver in the 13/14 years age group.

In the Women’s 200m Butterfly, Newcastle Swim Team’s Christa Wilson took Bronze in the 13/14 years age group, while her team mate Emily Large took Gold in the 16 years age group. Amelia Clynes (City of Leeds) took Gold in the 17/18 years age group while Isobel Grant (City of Sheffield) and Anna Cheesbrough (City of Leeds), took Gold and Bronze respectively in the 19 years age group.

In the Women’s 50m Freestyle, Kingston-Upon-Hulls Clementine Lovel claimed Bronze in the 13/14 years age group and City of Sunderland’s Freya Rayner took Gold in the 19 years age group while in the Men’s 400m IM, Newcastle Swim Team’s Adam Wilson and Alfie were back in the pool again, this time claiming Silver and Bronze respectively in the 16 years age group.

In the Women’s 14/16 Years 4x200m freestyle relay, City of Leeds took Gold with Sophie Hobbah, Tia Ward, Ciara Schlosshan, Leah Crisp closely followed by the City of Sheffield team of Alice Thickett, Madeleine Dyer, Sophie Barker, Lily Boseley who tool Silver. In the Women’s 17 Years and Over 4x200m freestyle relay, the team of Abbie Houston, Darcy Deakin, Isobel Grant and Eleanor Faulkner took Gold in a new British record time of 2.02.98.

Day 4 – 28th July 2017
In the Men’s 200m Breaststroke, York’s Harry Devlin took Bronze in the 17/18 years age group, this was followed by Gold for City of Leeds Georgia Coates and Bronze for City of Leeds Darcy Deakin in the Women’s 17/18 years 100m Freestyle and Gold for City of Sheffield’s Eleanor Faulkner in the 19 years age group.
Tynemouth’s Will Morris took Bronze in the Men’s 15 years 100m Butterfly, while Chester-Le-Street’s Alex Mason claimed Silver in the 16 years age group and City of Sunderland’s Adam Taylor took Silver in the 19 years age group.

In the Women’s 200m Backstroke, City of Leeds Tia Ward took Gold in the 13/14 years age group followed by Newcastle Swim Team’s Madelaine Hardingham who took Silver. In the 15 years age group, Niamh Page (City of Newcastle) took Bronze while Sophie Hobbah (City of Leeds) took Silver in the 16 years age group.

City of Sunderland’s Matt Wylie took Gold in the Men’s MC 50m Freestyle while in the Men’s 4 x 200m Freestyle relay, City of Sheffield’s team of Eugene Brooks-Clarke, Samuel Salih, Reuben Visda and Charlie Brown took Bronze in the 14/16 years age group and their team mates Luke Howdle, Joe Litchfield, Samuel Budd, Elliot Clogg took Gold in the 17 years and over age group.  

Day 5 – 29th July 2017
The women’s 400m Freestyle saw medals for North East swimmers across the age groups. City of Leeds Tia ward took Silver in the 13/14 years age group, City of Sheffield’s Alice Thickett claimed Gold in the 15 years age group, City of Leeds Leah Crisp claimed Gold in the 16 years age group followed by City of Sheffield’s Eleanor Faulkner who claimed Gold in the 19 years age group.

In the 200m IM, York City’s Jason Robson took Gold in the Men’s 13/14 years age group, Newcastle Swim Teams Madelaine Hardingham took Silver in the Women’s 13/14 years age group and City of Leeds Georgia Coates and City of Sheffield’s Amy Bell claimed a 1-2 in the 17/18 years age group.

Skipton's Ned Sharp took Silver in the Men's 13/14 years 50m Freestyle.  Tynemouth’s Will Morris took Silver in the Men’s 15 years 50m Freestyle followed by City of Sheffield’s Lily Boseley who also took Silver but in the Women’s 16 years age group.

In the 4x100m Freestyle relay events, medals were claimed by both Men’s and Women’s teams. In the Men’s 17 years and over age group, City of Sheffield’s team of Elliot Clogg, Cian Senior, Luke Howdle and Joe Litchfield took Silver while in the same age group in the women’s event their team mates Kate Clifton, Darcy Deakin, Maya Westlake and Eleanor Faulkner took Gold. The team of Tia Ward, Sophie Hobbah, Ciara Schlosshan and Leah Crisp from the City of Leeds took Silver in the 14/16 years age group.

Day 6 – 30th July 2017
Kick starting the last finals session of the championships, Richmond Dales Thomas Flower took Silver in the Men’s 17/18 years 200m Freestyle, City of Sheffield’s Luke Howdle took Silver in the 19 years age group while team mate Amy Bell took Bronze in the Women’s 17/18 years 100m Breaststroke.

In the Men’s 200m Backstroke, City of Sheffield swimmers Reuben Visda (13/14 years), Charlie Brown (16 years) and Elliot Clogg (17/18 years), claimed Bronze, Gold and Gold while Newcastle Swim Teams Nicholas Pyle took Silver in the 17/18 years age group.

Newcastle Swim Team’s Emily Large claimed Gold in the Women’s 16 years 100m Butterfly while City of Leeds Amelia Clynes took Bronze in the 17/18 years age group.

In the last individual event of the Championships, the Men’s 50m Butterfly, Skipton's Ned Sharp took Gold in the 13/14 years age group, Tynemouth’s Will Morris claimed Silver in the 15 years age group, Chester-Le-Street’s Alex Mason took Silver and Derwentside’s Dan Morley took Bronze while in the 19 years and over age group, City of Sunderland’s Adam Taylor claimed Gold.

City of Leeds ladies Sophie Hobbah, Ella Potts, Ciara Schlosshan and Leah Crisp claimed Silver in the Women’s 14/16 Years 4x100m Medley relay while in the 17 years and over age group, the team of Maya Westlake, Amy Bell, Isobel Grant and Eleanor Faulkner from the City of Sheffield took Silver.
