Four water polo players from the North East have been selected as part of a team of 13 British water polo players to compete in the LEN European Junior Water Polo Championships Qualification Tournament, which starts today in Manchester and runs until the 14th May.
Ben Stephenson (Sedgefield Water Polo Club), Connor Carpenter (City of Sheffield WPC), Michael Cousins (Sedgefield Water Polo Club) and Daniel Hunt (Rotherham Metro SC) will be competing in the tournament held at East Manchester Leisure Centre which will see the GB men’s U17 squad take on Romania, Lithuania, Ukraine and Israel in Group C.
The British team are in good form, and follows a successful EU Nations Cup campaign for England who finished second in Brno, Czech Republic. This is the first international water polo competition to take place in Britain since the final of the Commonwealth Championship in 2014.
City of Sheffield’s Connor Carpenter, who recently won the National Age Group Water Polo Championships U17s title in Manchester, will also be the captain of the British team. He was also named MVP as North East Steelers won February’s U18 Inter-Regional Championships and captained the GB team which competed in Brno. Vice-captain will be City of Manchester’s Jos Winstanley.
