Dual-Athlete Profile: Elowen, Darlington & Sedgefield

Background Elowen is an aspiring dual-athlete who trains with Darlington Swimming Club and Sedgefield Water Polo Club. She initially started with swimming but later discovered a passion for water polo after participating in the Festival of Aquatics. Since then, she has dedicated herself to both sports, finding fulfilment in the dynamic combination of swimming and water polo.

Expanding from Swimming to Water Polo Elowen’s journey into water polo began when she attended the Festival of Aquatics, which sparked her interest. Before that event, she was solely focused on swimming, but the excitement and team spirit of water polo drew her in. Encouraged by her positive experience, she decided to integrate both sports into her training routine.

Balancing Training Between Two Sports To manage her commitments effectively, Elowen adjusts her schedule by occasionally missing swimming sessions to accommodate water polo training. This balance allows her to excel in both disciplines without feeling overwhelmed.

Challenges in Dual Training At one point, Elowen considered giving up swimming, as she wasn’t enjoying it as much. However, she soon realised that water polo was enhancing her swimming skills, especially in terms of strength and endurance, which motivated her to continue both sports.

Cross-Sport Skill Development Elowen has noticed significant improvements in her upper body strength due to water polo. The throwing and catching skills required in the sport have strengthened her muscles, which, in turn, benefit her swimming performance, particularly during pull sessions.

Enjoyment and Fulfilment Before joining aquatic sports, Elowen participated in climbing, which was often a solitary activity. Now, through swimming and water polo, she has built strong friendships and become part of a supportive and encouraging community, making her experience even more enjoyable.

Advice to Other Young Athletes Elowen encourages young athletes to explore new aquatic disciplines, even if it feels challenging at first. She emphasises perseverance, assuring that the experience will improve over time and open doors to exciting opportunities.

Impact of Community and Events The supportive environment at local clubs and events like the Festival of Aquatics played a crucial role in Elowen’s decision to try water polo. The encouragement from coaches and the welcoming atmosphere made her feel comfortable and excited to learn something new.

Memorable Water Polo Moment One of Elowen’s most memorable moments from her first water polo experience was the thrill of throwing, catching, and shooting the ball during a match. She particularly enjoyed the teamwork aspect, which made the game even more engaging.

Managing Physical and Mental Demands Training for two sports has helped Elowen become more in tune with her body. She has learned to listen to her physical limits and adjust her training accordingly, with guidance from her coaches, ensuring she maintains a healthy balance.

Future Goals Elowen aspires to study sports science at university. She recognises that participating in multiple sports not only strengthens her athletic abilities but also enhances her knowledge, preparing her for academic success in the field of sports science.

Support System and Coaching Influence The unwavering support from her family, friends, and coaches has been instrumental in her journey. Their encouragement helps her push through challenges and continue enjoying both swimming and water polo.

Elowen’s dedication and passion for aquatic sports highlight the benefits of exploring multiple disciplines, demonstrating how commitment, balance, and support can lead to both athletic and personal growth.
