North East Artistic Swimming Programme

The North East Artistic Swimming Regional Programme is a high-performance initiative designed to support and develop young athletes in the region. With a focus on skill refinement, fitness, and personal growth, the programme offers a comprehensive training structure that blends technical discipline with creative expression, helping swimmers reach their full potential in the sport outside of a club setting.

The journey begins with a trial phase, where athletes are assessed on their current ability, potential, and suitability for the programme. Successful candidates are then invited to participate in a set of intensive training sessions from January through to May, held at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds-one of the region’s premier sporting facilities.

Each training day consists of six hours of structured practice: three hours of land-based training and three hours in the pool. This dual focus ensures well-rounded development, targeting the core components necessary for success in artistic swimming. Pool sessions include youth age group figures, technical skill development (including elements and routines difficulty chart practice), and speed swimming to build cardiovascular fitness and endurance. On land, athletes work on strength and conditioning (S&C), flexibility, extension, co-ordination, and team-building exercises—=m critical areas that directly translate to improved in-water performance.

One of the programme’s standout features is its integration of expert-led workshops and sessions from a variety of specialists that swimmers don’t tend to get in clubs. These include sports psychologists from Leeds Beckett University, who provide mental training and performance strategies; a dance teacher who enhances musical interpretation, posture, and movement quality; and a speed coach who focuses on improving swim technique and efficiency and many more! This interdisciplinary approach ensures that athletes are not only physically prepared but mentally and creatively equipped for high-level competition.

By fostering a supportive and challenging environment, the North East Artistic Swimming Programme nurtures individual talent while promoting teamwork and personal development. The holistic training approach helps athletes become more confident, resilient, and technically proficient, laying a strong foundation for future success in artistic swimming at regional, national, and international levels.
