Swim England North East is deeply saddened by the passing of Sam Greetham, a true icon in the world of swimming, who has died at the age of 80. Sam’s extraordinary contributions to both the region and the global swimming community will leave a lasting legacy.
Sam’s journey began in 1954 when he joined Scarborough Swimming Club. Over the next decade, he amassed more than 100 trophies as a competitive swimmer and set a long-standing record in the Castle-Foot Swim in 1965. His dedication to the sport was unwavering, and even after his competitive days, Sam continued to have a profound impact on the swimming community.
For over 40 years, Sam Greetham devoted his life to aquatic sports, earning the prestigious Harold Fern Award for his exceptional service. His expertise was recognised on the world stage when he was appointed to design the Open Water Swimming courses for the London, Beijing, and Tokyo Olympic Games. Sam also served as Chief Referee for the 10K Marathon Swim at London 2012, further cementing his status as a leading figure in the sport.
Despite his international achievements, Sam remained committed to nurturing local talent in the North East. He continued coaching at Scarborough Swimming Club, where he developed several swimmers who went on to represent England in Open Water Swimming and achieve National Times in the pool. His dedication to grassroots development exemplified his passion for the sport and his belief in giving back to the community.
Sam was also a pioneer in shaping the future of British swimming. As one of the founding members of British Swimming, established in the wake of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, he played a crucial role in revitalising the sport in the UK. Additionally, he chaired the LEN and FINA Technical Open Water Committees from 2020-2024, demonstrating his leadership on the international stage.
In 2023, Sam’s unparalleled contributions were recognised with his induction as an honour administrator into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in Cancun, Mexico, marking the crowning achievement of a remarkable career.
Swim England North East extends its deepest condolences to Sam’s family, friends, and the Scarborough swimming community. His impact on the sport, from local club coaching to global leadership, will never be forgotten.
A service of thanksgiving will be held in Sam’s honour at St Laurence’s Church, Scalby, on Monday, September 2, at 1:00 p.m. Family flowers only, with donations welcomed for Scarborough RNLI.
