After an impressive 17 years of dedication to North East Regional aquatic sports, Kath Smith, a committed volunteer, is retiring from her role as Championships Manager. Known for her reliability, attention to detail, and extensive experience in event administration, Kath has been an invaluable part of the team, contributing her time and energy behind the scenes to ensure the success of numerous events across the Region.
Kath’s journey as a volunteer began nearly two decades ago, and over the years, she has played multiple roles within the North East Regional organisation. Her primary focus has been on handling administrative tasks, either in the critical planning stages leading up to events or managing operations on the day itself. Her work often involved coordinating schedules, liaising with teams, handling participant records, and ensuring every logistical detail was accounted for. Her attention to detail, especially in administrative roles, has kept things running smoothly, allowing athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and attendees to full enjoy the Championships.
In recognition of her remarkable service, Nicola Atherton, Chair of Northumberland & Durham and Director on the North East Regional Board, presented Kath with a small token of appreciation at her final Regional event in Sheffield. This gesture of gratitude was a fitting send-off, marking her last event for the Region. Kath’s contributions to the North East Regional championships will be deeply missed, but her dedication to the sport will continue, as she shifts her focus to national roles with Swim England.
With Kath stepping down, her Championships Manager position now stands vacant, leaving significant shoes to fill. The team plans to recruit a successor in due course, seeking someone who can carry forward her legacy of excellence and commitment.
As we bid farewell to Kath in her regional role, the entire North East Regional team, along with athletes, coaches, and supporters, extend heartfelt thanks and admiration for her years of service. Kath’s contributions have left an incredible impact on the Region’s championships, and her legacy will continue to inspire future volunteers within the North East community.
