Today marks a momentous occasion for Swim England North East as we celebrate both the 80th birthday and the retirement of an extraordinary figure in our swimming community – Ray Gordon.
Ray’s journey in swimming began in 1977 when he took his son, Christopher, to his first lessons at Killingworth Swimming Club. From that moment on, Ray’s passion for the sport ignited decades-long legacy of volunteerism, leadership, and innovation at every level – club, county, regional, national and international.
He soon became a qualified official, passing the newly introduced referees’ exam in 1981 – likely the second person in the North East to do so and certainly the youngest at the time. His commitment to officiating led to countless hours on pool decks, offering his expertise at local and national meets, always striving to uphold and improve the standards of the sport.
Ray’s contribution to City of Newcastle ASC (now Newcastle Swim Team) has been immense. As a committee member, he was a trailblazer in introducing computerised results and event processing in the area. The club recognised his tireless efforts with Life Membership and, most recently, invited him to take on the role of Chairperson.
His impact extended far beyond club boundaries. Ray has served on numerous boards and committees over the years, including the Northumberland and Durham Executive since 1987, where he took responsibility for diving and served as President in 1992. He held significant positions within Swim England North East (previously NER/NEC), acting as Finance Manager since 1999, and was a vital part of the Competitions Team for decades.
At the national and international level, Ray’s dedication is equally impressive. From Chief Recorder and Technology Manager for ASA National Events since 1980 to volunteering at major championships including the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, his technical acumen and organisational skill have underpinned many successful meets.
One of Ray’s proudest contributions has been his involvement in para-swimming. As Chairman of the British Swimming Disability Committee and an ever-present figure at major para-swimming events since 2006 – missing only a single heats session – Ray and his wife Linda have been steadfast supporters of inclusive sport, continuing to travel the globe in support of para-athletes.
Ray’s work has not gone unrecognised. In 2003, Sport Newcastle honoured him with the prestigious Wilkinson Sword for services to sport, and in 2019, he was awarded Swim England’s Harold Fern Award – a fitting tribute to his lifelong service and volunteerism.
Despite stepping back from national roles in 2018, Ray remained an integral part of the regional scene. Until the end of 2024, he continued to serve as Swim England North East’s Finance Manager. However, he is still currently a board member for both Swim England North East and Northumberland and Durham. His knowledge, guidance, and good humour have been invaluable.
Ray Gordon’s retirement from his official duties at the end of 2024, and with his 80th birthday today, marks the end of an era. But we know his passion for swimming, especially para-swimming, will continue to shine through in everything he does.
