A team of swimmers from East Leeds Swimming Club travelled to Šamorín, Slovakia, to compete at the European Masters Swimming Championships, producing a series of impressive performances against some of the best Masters swimmers from across Europe.
Competing across a range of events, East Leeds swimmers secured multiple top-10 finishes and narrowly missed out on the podium on several occasions.
In the 25-29 age group, George Russell enjoyed a standout championship, placing 4th in the 1.5km Open Water event and achieving strong pool results with 5th in the 800m Freestyle, 8th in the 400m Freestyle, and 9th in the 200m Freestyle.
Fellow 25-29 swimmer Darcy Allison delivered consistent performances across the breaststroke events, finishing 9th in the 50m Breaststroke, 10th in the 100m Breaststroke, and 10th in the 200m Breaststroke.
Also competing in the 25-29 category, Lucas Tyler recorded an excellent 5th-place finish in the 200m Butterfly, narrowly missing out on a medal.
In the 30-34 age group, Gareth Allen posted two top-six finishes, placing 5th in the 100m Butterfly and 6th in the 50m Butterfly. Richard Ayre finished 8th in the 50m Breaststroke and 17th in the 50m Freestyle, while David Westcough competed in three sprint events, placing 26th in the 100m Freestyle, 41st in the 50m Butterfly, and 42nd in the 50m Freestyle.
In the 35-39 age group, Rebecca Pearson secured an impressive 14th place in the 50m Freestyle.
The championships concluded with the Mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay (120-159 age group), where George Russell, Richard Ayre, Rebecca Pearson and Darcy Allison combined to finish an excellent 6th overall.
The performances in Slovakia highlighted the strength of East Leeds’ Masters programme, with swimmers achieving a number of top-10 European finishes and proudly representing both their club and the region on the international stage.
