The iconic London Aquatics Centre once again played host to one of the most exciting events on the swimming calendar, as in May 2026, the AP Race London International brought together elite athletes from across Great Britain and around the world for three days of high-quality racing.
Renowned for attracting Olympic, World, and European medallists alongside some of the sport’s most promising emerging talent, the competition provided a world-class environment and an atmosphere unmatched by any domestic meet.
Significant investment from Swim England North East, along with support from Yorkshire and Northumberland and Durham Aquatics, enabled a team of 40 athletes aged 17 and over — supported by a dedicated staff team — to travel to London with the ambition of testing themselves against some of the strongest competition available while gaining invaluable experience on one of swimming’s biggest stages.
Rising to the Challenge
The squad made a smooth and efficient journey to London, arriving well-prepared and ready to compete. From the outset, swimmers rose to the occasion, confidently stepping up to race against international opposition from countries including the USA, Great Britain, the home nation Commonwealth teams, Germany, Japan, and a host of European nations.
Across the weekend, the North East athletes delivered some of their strongest performances to date. The team achieved a wealth of finalists across Junior, B, and Super Finals, alongside an impressive haul of junior medals. Several swimmers also made standout appearances in Super Finals, securing medals and showcasing the depth and rising talent within the region.
The competition also provided moments of excitement beyond individual races. Exhibition events added a sense of fun and entertainment, while the North East relay teams were a particular highlight. Racing head-to-head against international squads, our relay teams shone brightly — going head-to-head with multiple international squads, holding their own and racing without fear.
Overcoming Challenges
The weekend presented a number of significant challenges. A record-breaking May heatwave, with temperatures climbing into the mid-30s, created demanding conditions both in and out of the pool. This was compounded by a major scheduling clash with a West Ham relegation-deciding match, bringing an estimated 60,000–70,000 additional spectators into the surrounding area.
These factors required careful planning, organisation, and adaptability to ensure that all 40 swimmers remained safe, hydrated, and focused throughout the competition.
Outstanding Support Behind the Scenes
A key factor in the success of the trip was the exceptional work of the support staff.
Huge credit must go to our exceptional team managers, Jeremy Stacey and Mel Robison, whose meticulous organisation, unwavering care, and tireless hard work ensured everything ran smoothly despite the obstacles.
The coaching team also delivered outstanding support. Head coach Danny Martland with support from assistant coach Jack Moulton brought invaluable experience, along with a calm, positive presence and strong tactical insight that helped steady the group and elevate performances. Meanwhile, coach Martin Hall was consistently reliable, offering practical guidance and reassurance to both swimmers and staff throughout the weekend.
Together, the staff created an environment in which athletes could focus fully on their performances and maximise their potential.
Building for the Future
Beyond the impressive results, the weekend represented another important step in supporting and retaining swimmers aged 17+ within the region. Swim England North East continues to lead the way in this crucial area, providing opportunities for athletes to compete at a high level and remain engaged in the sport.
The experiences gained, combined with the resilience shown and success achieved, will serve as a strong foundation for future development. Events such as this not only strengthen performance but also inspire athletes to continue striving for excellence in the seasons ahead.
Throughout the competition, the team environment remained a standout feature. Whether racing individually or as part of relay teams, swimmers consistently supported one another poolside, reflecting the values of teamwork, resilience, and excellence that underpin the region’s programmes.
