Paddle Pals Water Polo

At Rotherham Metro, an exciting new initiative is making waves in the pool. Paddle Pals is a brand-new water polo session designed specifically for people with cognitive impairments, offering a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment to get active, build confidence, and connect with others.

Led by Matt Birch (NE Talent Centre Head Coach), the sessions focus on fun, participation, and personal development rather than competition. With his experience and passion for the sport, Matt has created a programme that introduces players to the basics of water polo in a way that is accessible, supportive, and engaging for everyone involved.

The benefits of Paddle Pals extend far beyond the pool. Participants can improve their physical health, coordination, and water confidence, while also developing important social skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience. Just as importantly, the sessions provide a space where players can relax, have fun, and enjoy being part of a welcoming community.

A project like this doesn’t happen without a strong team behind it. Special thanks go to Sarah, Joanne, Harriet, and Holly, whose support and dedication have been instrumental in bringing Paddle Pals to life.

Gratitude is also extended to Places for People at Maltby and Ambience Healthcare Ltd for their generous support, helping turn this vision into reality.

Paddle Pals is already proving to be a fantastic addition to the local community—bringing smiles, building confidence, and showing that sport really can be for everyone.
