The Swim England North East Region held camps for Swimmers and Para-Swimmers in Catterick on Sunday 21st November. The camps form part of the Swim England Talent pathways.
Over fifty athletes were given the opportunity to take part on the day in activities which included pool sessions, dry land training, lifestyle and nutrition workshops. This is the first time the region has run a Para-swimming session and a Regional Swimming Camp on the same day in the same venue and is something which they hope to do more of moving forwards.
On the day, athletes were supported by a range of staff including coaches, team managers, programme leads and specialists who all helped to ensured that the athletes engaged well and were able to take learn from the camp experience.
Thanks goes to all athletes, staff and parents who engaged so positively on the day.
Speaking about the Para-swimming session, Head Coach Keith Hall (Richmond Dales) said “It was a real pleasure to welcome these athletes to the Regional Para-session at Catterick Leisure Centre. There was a real mix of experience with some who have attended several camps and sessions before and others who were experiencing this training for the first time. All the athletes worked extremely hard in both the pool session and the land session. The day couldn’t have been possible without the support of the coaching team, poolside helpers and team manager so a big shout out to all of them. We look forward to welcoming the athletes back in the new year for the second session in the series.”
Some of the athletes and parents gave the following feedback:
“Thank you so much for all your efforts today. My Daughter really enjoyed the day. She has discussed the changes she will take to training sessions and has enjoyed meeting other swimmers and coaches”
“I found it hugely useful and I can’t wait until the next one. I particularly liked the races at the end of the swimming session.”
“The coach gave me loads of useful pointers in my swim session that I can use in training.”
” I now feel confident that I will be able to work on my underwater work and better understanding of a cross over turn to enable me to perfect them.”
” I would maybe have found some additional sport psychology useful. Athletes balancing training and school work at the expense of a social life is tough to try and balance”.
