Swim England North East has thrown its support behind Swim England’s latest initiative, “Keep it in Your Locker,” aimed at safeguarding teenage members and preventing the misuse of mobile devices in changing rooms during regulated activities.
The campaign comes as a response to a recent update in Wavepower, Swim England’s safeguarding policy, which now explicitly prohibits the use of mobile phones or devices in changing rooms during Swim England activities. This measure aims to protect members from potential instances of inappropriate photos or videos being taken.
The centrepiece of the campaign is a powerful 60-second film, which premiered on Swim England’s TikTok and Instagram channels. The video features six youngsters, two of whom are depicted attempting to record their friends in the changing room. Through compelling visuals and messaging, the film emphasises the importance of respecting privacy, urging viewers to leave their phones in lockers and prioritise safety and respect.
Rebecca Roberts, founder of Thread & Fable, led an extensive consultation process during the campaign’s development. This process involved gathering feedback from Swim England members under the age of 18, parents, coaches, and the national governing body’s Youth Advisory Panel. Participants shared their perspectives on the Wavepower update, identified potential barriers to compliance, and offered insights into addressing the issue effectively.
