On Sunday 26th January, Swim England North East held the second Regional Para Swimming Camp of the season at Catterick Leisure Centre. The camp welcomed 29 young athletes from across the region for a packed day of swimming, land training, and educational sessions.
Starting Strong with Land Training
The day began with a one-hour land training session led by Keith Hall (Richmond Dales), the camp’s Lead Coach, supported by Coaches Zoe Cowan (Richmond Dales), Terry Raddings (City of Wakefield SC), and Kylah Cowan (Richmond Dales). The session focused on a thorough RMAP pre-pool routine, highlighting the structure and importance of effective warm-ups.
Athletes then practiced land-based exercises designed to be easily replicated at home using minimal equipment. These exercises were tailored for swimmers new to the sport or those with limited access to land training within their clubs. The coaching team explained how the exercises supported specific strokes and muscle groups, offering personalised guidance for each athlete.
Goal Setting and Building Focus
The camp transitioned into a classroom session on goal setting, where athletes learned about structuring effective goals and how to evaluate their progress. With examples provided, they completed goal-setting worksheets to help them plan and track their swimming development.
Diving Into Pool Training
Following the classroom session, athletes moved poolside, where they were split into five groups. Each group worked closely with a coach to improve stroke drills, underwater phases, turn speeds, and starts. The pool session also included a small speed set and concluded with fun team relays. Additional coaching support was provided by Ben Gilchrist (Richmond Dales) and Alyson Walrond (City of Sheffield), who attended to observe and learn more about Para coaching.

Wrapping Up the Day
The day ended with a classroom revision session on RMAP principles, delivered by Terry Raddings (City of Wakefield SC). Athletes also completed an “Athlete Profile” questionnaire to provide feedback and help shape future camps. Special thanks go to Ruby Dilworth, a senior swimmer from Richmond Dales, who assisted with paperwork and supported the swimmers throughout the day.
A Team Effort
The success of the camp was made possible by the hard work of the coaching team, Team Manager Christine Roskilly for overseeing registration and welfare, and the dedication of the athletes who gave their all in every session.
