Sedgefield Water Polo Club’s Ben Alderson has recently returned from representing the Great Britain Men’s team at the World Cup Division 2 tournament in Malta, marking another significant milestone in his developing international career.
The 20-year-old was part of the GB squad competing against strong opposition, including China, Montenegro, Slovenia, Neutral Athletes (NAB), and South Africa. The tournament provided a valuable opportunity for the team to test themselves against some of the world’s top sides, ultimately finishing 21st overall.
Despite tough fixtures, the experience gained will prove crucial as the squad continues its preparations ahead of the European Qualifiers in 2027. Ben contributed to the campaign by scoring two goals across the tournament.

Ben’s journey in water polo began at the age of six with Sedgefield Water Polo Club. Since then, he has progressed through both Regional and National Academy pathways, earning selection to national squads at various levels. His international experience includes representing GB U19s at the EU Nations and competing for the senior GB Men’s team at the World Cup in Istanbul in 2024.
In recognition of his performances and commitment to the sport, Ben was named the Swim England National Award Talented Water Polo Athlete of the Year in 2025, underlining his status as one of the country’s leading young players.
Alongside his international achievements, Ben currently captains Durham University Men’s first team, competing in the BUCS league.
His continued progression is a testament to his dedication and the strength of the pathway within the North East, with everyone at Swim England North East congratulating Ben on his achievements and looking forward to following his future success on the international stage.
