Newcastle Swim Team (NST) is seeking an experienced and ambitious Head & Performance Coach to lead the club’s coaching programme and Performance Squad, shaping the next generation of national-level swimmers in the North East.
NST currently supports 19 national-level athletes, including swimmers on the Swim England Youth Performance Squad, with regular progression to British, English, and Scottish National Championships, junior international pathways, and UK and US university programmes.
The Role
The Head & Performance Coach will take overall responsibility for performance delivery across the club, working closely with the Assistant Head Coach and leading the wider coaching team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and delivering annual training plans aligned to the Swim England Optimal Athlete Development Framework (OADF)
- Developing competition strategies targeting national qualification and performance benchmarks
- Preparing swimmers for British-level competition and junior international progression
- Leading goal setting, performance review, and analysis
- Integrating strength and conditioning within the performance model
- Overseeing the swimmer pathway from entry through to performance, with clear progression criteria
- Leading and mentoring coaches, establishing technical standards, and fostering a high-performance culture
- Maintaining strong relationships with Swim England, regional and county structures, and national programmes
- Embedding high standards of safeguarding, welfare, inclusivity, and athlete wellbeing
Candidate Profile
Applicants should:
- Hold a Swim England Level 3 qualification (or Level 2 with extensive experience)
- Have a proven track record of developing swimmers to national level or beyond
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of long-term athlete development and performance planning
- Show confident leadership and experience mentoring coaches
Appointment Details
- Contract: Employed
- Hours: Approx. 40 hours per week (including early mornings, evenings, and weekends)
- Salary: Negotiable, dependent on experience
- Location: Newcastle (Gosforth & East End Pools; new facility opening 2027)
