London Aquatics Centre – 13th-15th June 2025
The North East Region’s Masters swimmers delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 British Masters Championships, held for the first time at the iconic London Aquatics Centre – the venue of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
This landmark edition of the Championships welcomed over 1,000 athletes from across the home nations, with swimmers competing across three days of fast-paced, high-quality racing. Among them, North East clubs rose to the occasion, bringing home an impressive 88 medals – including 31 Golds, 36 Silvers and 21 Bronzes.
One of the standout moments of the meet came courtesy of Emma Wills from York City Swimming Club, who etched her name into the European record books. Wills stormed to a remarkable 5:30.94 in the 45-49 Female 400m Individual Medley, winning her age group by over a minute and setting a new European record – the only individual European record by a North East swimmer during the championships.
The success continued into the relays, where City of Sheffield spearheaded the regional charge. Their Mixed 240+ 4x50m Freestyle Relay team blazed to a 1:54.19 finish, setting a new European record, powered by a powerful 26.81 anchor leg.
North East clubs were a formidable presence throughout the weekend, contributing to the electric atmosphere with strong representation in nearly every session. From individual triumphs to relay heroics, the region’s swimmers demonstrated experience, resilience, and elite performance on the national stage.
With 88 medals and several record-breaking swims, the 2025 British Masters Championships will be remembered as a proud chapter for North East Masters swimming. Congratulations to all clubs, coaches, and athletes for a truly memorable meet.
