On Sunday 30th January 2021, 33 athletes attended a Northumberland and Durham Swimming camp at the Louisa Centre in Stanley.
The camp forms part of the Northumberland and Durham Performance Programme and sits on the Swim England talent pathway and provided an opportunity for swimmers to develop their technical, tactical, physical and psychological skills with swimmers of a similar age and ability from across the county. The camp also provided an opportunity for swimmers to work with different coaches and to train in a different environment.
Because of the pandemic, the county were unable to run a face to face camp in 2021, therefore this camp engaged with athletes in the 11 year old age group where age is defined as at 31st December 2021. This ensured that the athletes from this age group didn’t miss out on a training opportunity.
Many thanks to the staff who worked hard to ensure the camp was a success: Head Coach Chris Leighton (BOSSS), Team Manager Victoria Brotherton (South Tyneside) and Skills Coaches Katy Batley (Alnwick), Sue Thorpe (Newcastle Swim Team), Ross Bradley (Gateshead and Whickham), Emily Betham (Tynemouth) and Jonathan Dean (City of Sunderland). Thanks also to the athletes who attended with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn new skills and try new things.
The next Northumberland and Durham camp is planned for the end of March at the Louise Centre in Stanley for the 11 year olds as of December 31st 2022. More information will be provided on this after the Northumberland and Durham Championships.
