The North East Region proudly sent a team of twelve talented players to compete in the U14 Inter Regional Championships, held in Walsall on the weekend of 7th–8th December.
The team, named the North East Steelers, brought together players from several clubs across the region, showcasing the depth of talent in the area. Under the expert guidance of coaches Gabby Williams and Matt Birch, with support from Isabel Olcer and Dominic Epton, the players trained hard in preparation for this competitive tournament. Represented clubs included Rotherham Metro, City of Sheffield, Sedgefield, and Morley. The Steelers’ squad comprised the following players:
- Goalkeeper: Phoebe Pitchfork
- Outfield players: India Walsh, Maggie Arthur, Eliza Wright, Kara Stanton, Arwen Henderson, De’Anna Edwards, Isla Cartwright, Imogen Henry, Harriet Birch, Edie Arthur, and Rosie McLoughlin
At the tournament, Matt Birch served as Head Coach, assisted by Isabel Olcer, ensuring the team was well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
Group Stage Battles
The North East Steelers faced a competitive group stage, matched against Ireland, London Sharks, and South East.
- Game 1: Ireland
The Steelers opened against a strong Ireland squad, who benefit from regular national training. Despite a determined effort and holding their opponents until the third quarter, the Steelers eventually fell to a 2-12 loss. - Game 2: London Sharks
After regrouping and refocusing, the Steelers delivered an impressive performance against London Sharks. The match was a hard-fought battle, with both teams matching each other goal for goal. The game ended in a thrilling 6-6 draw. - Game 3: South East
The final group match saw the Steelers take on South East in another close contest. This time, the Steelers came out on top, securing a well-earned 7-5 victory.
With one win, one draw, and one loss, the Steelers finished joint second in their group. However, they narrowly missed out on the Semi-Finals due to goal difference.
Play-Offs for 5th–8th Place
The Steelers showed resilience and determination on Sunday as they competed in the play-offs.
- Game 4: West Midlands Warriors
Facing the home side, West Midlands Warriors, the Steelers delivered a commanding performance, winning 9-5 and earning their spot in the 5th-place play-off. - Game 5: South East (Rematch)
In their final game, the Steelers faced familiar opponents in South East. After conceding early goals, the Steelers rallied and fought back valiantly. However, time was not on their side, and they fell to a 5-9 defeat, securing a commendable 6th place overall in the tournament.
Team Highlights and MVP
Throughout the tournament, the Steelers demonstrated outstanding teamwork, skill, and determination, with many players competing a year or two young for this age group. India Walsh, who played predominantly at Centre Back and contributed to the scoreline in every match, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
