The Swim England North East Regional Swimming (25m) Championships 2025 provided one of the major highlights of the year and showcased the strength, depth and progression of swimming across the region.
The championships brought together leading swimmers from clubs throughout the North East and delivered an exciting weekend of racing, personal best performances and championship records. The event highlighted the continued development of athletes across all age groups, with swimmers demonstrating high standards of competition and significant progression throughout the season.

One of the defining highlights of 2025 came through the Swim England North East senior swimming programme at the AP Race London International. A team of 24 athletes aged 17 and over travelled to the London Aquatics Centre to compete alongside some of the world’s leading swimmers.
The competition represented a major step forward for the region’s commitment to retaining and supporting senior swimmers beyond traditional age-group pathways. Athletes from the North East delivered outstanding performances throughout the meet, securing finalists, podium finishes and strong results in Super Finals, B Finals and junior events.
More importantly, the experience provided swimmers with exposure to a world-class racing environment in front of large crowds and alongside elite international competitors. The event was widely regarded as transformational for the region’s senior programme, reinforcing the belief that North East swimmers can compete confidently at the highest level.
The success of the initiative laid strong foundations for the future and demonstrated the region’s commitment to long-term athlete development.
Continued Growth in Para-Swimming
Para-swimming continued to grow across the North East throughout 2025, with increased opportunities for competition, development and athlete support.
The Swim England North East and North West Para-Swimming Championships were announced as a major regional event for 2025, providing classified para-swimmers with an important competition opportunity and a pathway towards national-level racing. The final North East Regional Para Camp of the 2024/25 season, held at Catterick Leisure Centre in April 2025, brought swimmers together for technical coaching, race skills development and team-building opportunities.
The camps played a significant role in supporting swimmers of varying classifications and experience levels, helping athletes build confidence, improve technical performance and strengthen relationships within the para-swimming community.
The North East also continued to celebrate emerging talent within para-swimming, with several young athletes progressing strongly through the regional pathway and gaining valuable competition experience.

Masters swimming enjoyed a hugely successful year across the North East in 2025, with swimmers achieving outstanding performances on both national and international stages.
One of the year’s standout achievements came at the 2025 British Masters Championships at the London Aquatics Centre, where North East swimmers delivered exceptional performances at the historic event. Regional athletes secured an impressive 88 medals, including 31 gold medals, while York City’s Emma Wills produced one of the performances of the championships by setting a new European record in the Women’s 45–49 400m Individual Medley.
The success continued internationally at the 2025 World Masters Aquatics Championships in Singapore, where North East athletes proudly represented the region on the global stage. Swimmers returned home with medals, records and significant international experience, highlighting the strength and continued growth of Masters swimming across the North East.
The achievements throughout 2025 reinforced the region’s commitment to lifelong participation in aquatics, demonstrating that competitive success and high-performance opportunities continue well beyond traditional age-group swimming. Masters swimming also remained an important part of club culture across the North East, helping strengthen community engagement, mentorship and long-term involvement in the sport.
