British Swimming have recently announced team line-ups for a very busy period of racing in the Summer. Swimmers have been selected for the Under 23’s European Championships and European Junior Championships.
There is a strong 18-swimmer lineup for the U23 European Championships that will be held in Dublin, Ireland. Out of the 18 swimmers, Leah Scholsshan (City of Leeds), is apart of the squad heading out to Dublin.
It is the first year that the U23 European Championships will be held, and it is set to be an exciting event for those swimmers who have the chance to represent their country on the international stage.
Leah had an incredible week at the British Championships where she set season and personal bests in every race that she swam as well as achieving 2x Bronze Medals in the 200m & 400m Individual Medley.
As well as Leah being selected, Mike Taylor (City of Sheffield) was also announced as one of the coaches being selected as part of the coaching staff heading out to the Championships this summer.
The 2023 European Junior Swimming Championships, which take place in Belgrade from July 4–9, will feature an exciting 34-person British Swimming team. There are a total of 4 North East-based swimmers selected, which are:
- Ashleigh Baillie, City of Sheffield
- Phoebe Cooper, City of Sheffield
- Sienna Robinson, City of Sheffield
- Leah Schlosshan, City of Leeds
For athletes born primarily between 2005 and 2009, the annual competition highlights the best emerging talent on the continent. Top swimmers from the competition frequently go on to make an impact on the senior European and international stages.
Leah Schlosshan won GOLD in the 200m Individual Medley at the European Junior Championships last year and will look to defend her title this year. Ashleigh Baillie was also a medalist at last year’s championships, and Sienna Robinson, who won a silver medal at this year’s British Swimming Championships, will look to make a podium appearance at this summer’s European Junior Championships. Last year, Phoebe Cooper competed in the European Youth Olympic Festival and won medals. A strong North East representation is expected to assist the British Team this summer!
Richard Denigan (City of Leeds) was also announced as one of the coaches being selected as part of the coaching staff heading out to the Championships this summer.
