The North East Girls’ Water Polo programme made a strong start to 2026 with its first regional session of the year, held on Saturday 24th January. The session brought together a large and enthusiastic group of young athletes from across the region, highlighting the continued growth and strength of the girls’ pathway.
A total of 47 players attended, including four trialists. The 2012-and-under age group welcomed 19 players, while the 2011–2008 group saw an impressive turnout of 28 athletes. Both sessions were carefully structured to support age-appropriate technical and tactical development.
The younger group focused on fundamental skills, with particular emphasis on leg movements and learning how to release effectively to create space and become available for a pass. These core skills form a vital foundation for long-term player development in water polo.
Meanwhile, the older age group worked on more advanced tactical concepts, including man-up and man-down situations, as well as M-zone defensive structures. The session provided valuable preparation as players continue to progress through the regional pathway.

The session was widely regarded as a success, with excellent engagement and effort from all athletes. Swim England North East would like to extend sincere thanks to Gabby, Tracey, Clare, Sarah G and Sarah E for their support and assistance in delivering the session.
The session also provided an opportunity to recognise the programme’s four remaining 2008-born players — Evie, Rowena, Caitlin and Anna — who will be graduating from the pathway over the coming months. While they are still awaiting the opportunity to compete in their final Inter Regional competition, their commitment and contribution to North East water polo is greatly valued.

Swim England North East looks forward to building on this positive start as the 2026 season progresses.
