North East Water Polo Girls came together on Saturday 9th May for a productive and energetic regional development day, with athletes and volunteers demonstrating the continued growth and strength across the region.
The session provided opportunities both in and out of the water, with the senior players taking part in a full programme of matches alongside a regional referee course. It was particularly encouraging to see three female officials successfully complete the course, helping to strengthen the officiating pathway within North East water polo.
Congratulations to Tracy, Caitlin and Sarah on completing their regional referee qualification, and thank you to Doug for delivering the course and supporting the development of the region’s newest referees.
The younger athletes focused on key tactical and technical elements of the game, including centre forward and centre back play, man-up situations and counter attacking. Coaches praised the effort and attitude shown throughout the day, with all players working hard and engaging positively with the sessions.
The event also marked an important stage in the selection process for the 2011 Inter Regional Squad. With a high standard on display across the group, selectors faced some difficult decisions. Squad emails are expected to be issued over the coming week.
Selection discussions considered several factors, including squad balance, competition opportunities, pool time and the wider calendar, with the U16 National League and U15 Champions League also taking place on the same weekend. While not everyone can be selected this time, there are still further opportunities later in the year through the 2012 NAGS and 2013 Inter Regional programmes.
