Swim England North East Region is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Anne Reah, a beloved figure within the swimming community. Anne’s unwavering dedication to the sport spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on all those she touched.
Anne’s journey with swimming began in 1982 when her family joined the ranks of the Killingworth Swimming Club, later transitioning to the City of Newcastle Swimming Club as her children progressed. However, it was not just as a spectator or parent that Anne made her mark; she became an integral part of the sport’s infrastructure.
As a Swimming Official, Anne attained the esteemed role of Referee in 2001, presiding over competitions at every level from local clubs to national events. Yet, her impact extended far beyond the poolside. With her keen accountancy background, Anne assumed the role of Treasurer for the Northumberland and Durham Swimming Association, demonstrating her multifaceted contributions to the sport.
However, it was Anne’s passion for administration that truly set her apart. Beginning as the Secretary for the City of Newcastle in 2003, she eventually ascended to the position of Board Member for Swim England North East Region. Her tireless efforts and dedication did not go unnoticed by her peers, culminating in her appointment as President of both the NDSA and SENER. In 2017, Anne achieved the highest honour a volunteer could receive, being named President of Swim England, a testament to her unparalleled commitment and service.
The members of Swim England North East Region extend their deepest condolences to the Reah family and all who had the privilege of knowing Anne. In a heartfelt message, her family shared that Anne passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by love. Her battle with dementia had been arduous, with the last few months proving particularly challenging. However, Anne’s legacy of love, dedication, and passion for swimming will endure, cherished by all those whose lives she touched.
Anne Reah’s presence will be deeply missed within the swimming community, but her spirit will continue to inspire generations to come. As we reflect on her remarkable life and contributions, let us honour her memory by continuing to uphold the values she held dear and by embracing our loved ones with an extra measure of affection, just as Anne would have wanted.
