Swim England North East extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of John Renshaw, a dedicated coach and beloved figure in the swimming community. John passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy that has profoundly impacted the sport and those who knew him.
John Renshaw was a cornerstone of Chester-le-Street ASC, a club he helped establish in 1975. For over 25 years, John poured his passion and expertise into the club, shaping it into a nurturing environment for young swimmers. His journey in swimming began under the guidance of 1948 Olympian Donald Bland, instilling in him a love for the sport that he would carry throughout his life.
Throughout his tenure at Chester-le-Street, John played a pivotal role in the early development of numerous elite swimmers. Among them were Sam Purvis, who competed in the 1984 and 1992 Olympics, and Stephanie Proud, a 2012 Olympian. However, John’s influence extended beyond just coaching elite athletes. His dedication inspired both of his sons to follow in his footsteps, with Gary coaching at Chester-le-Street from 2008 to 2020 and Kevin from 2000 to 2004 before joining British Swimming, now AquaticsGB.
John’s legacy is evident in the accomplishments of his swimmers. David Proud went on to coach at one of Australian Swimming’s High Performance Centres, while Kevin Renshaw has been a part of Team GB’s staff for three Olympic Games. David McNulty, another of John’s mentees, is set to participate in his fifth Olympics in Paris, having coached over 50 World and Olympic medalists and two World record holders alongside Kevin. Despite his significant impact, John remained a humble man, always proud of his swimmers’ achievements.
Beyond his coaching accomplishments, John was a pillar of support for young coaches in the region, always ready to offer guidance and advice. His contributions extended to his work on the N&D swimming committee, where he was a respected and popular figure within both the regional and national swimming communities.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He cherished his wife Valerie, his three children, Gary, Kevin, and Dawn, and his seven grandchildren. His love for his family was evident to all who knew him, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Swim England North East mourns the loss of John Renshaw, a remarkable coach, mentor, and family man. His contributions to swimming and the lives he touched will be remembered and celebrated for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
