During the month of June, the North East Region held two open water camps for a selected group of endurance swimmers.
The first camp took place at Sunderland Aquatics Centre and the swimmers did a pool based session where they practised open water skills such as sighting, drafting, turning and mass starts.
It was the first time many of the swimmers had done any of these new technical skills, and they did a great job of picking up the basics. Open water is often fast and furious with swimmers jostling for position as they head off from the start in a line. As they approach the turning buoys its all about choosing the line, getting into the best position, and then navigating around the buoy (on the outside) and heading in the right direction towards the next buoy.
The second camp was an open water swim at Manvers lake in Rotherham. The swimmers had to contend with the weather conditions, which included sunshine, wind and even rain! They also had to get to grips with wetsuits, cold water, and the resident wildlife community…
