Sarah Small, the Regional Development Manager for Swim England North East, is set to tackle the iconic Great North Run in support of North Yorkshire Sport. Sarah, who has a lifelong passion for fitness and sports, has decided to use her participation in the renowned half marathon as an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for a cause close to her heart.
Running has always been a part of Sarah’s life, although she admits it hasn’t always been her favourite activity. She fondly recalls the challenges of cross country races during her teenage years, including one memorable event where she lost a shoe in the muddy slopes along side a Welsh ski slope. Despite occasional setbacks, Sarah has maintained a commitment to staying fit and active, with swimming, winter sports, cycling, and various exercise classes featuring prominently in her routine.
When the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Sarah, like many others, had to adapt her exercise regimen. With restrictions limiting social interactions and gym closures, she turned to running as a means of staying active. Living in the picturesque countryside, Sarah found solace in exploring the local moors, hills, and riverside, often venturing out alone or with a running partner. These outdoor escapades became a source of both physical fitness and mental wellbeing, especially during the trying times of the pandemic.

The arrival of Sarah’s second child inspired her to continue her running journey. Determined to demonstrate the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle as a busy working mother, she decided to participate in the Great North Run. By taking part in this iconic event, Sarah hopes to instill in her children the value of staying fit and pursuing personal goals. She wants them to see that being a parent and having a demanding career should not hinder one’s ability to engage in sporting activities.
Sarah’s choice to raise funds for North Yorkshire Sport stems from her understanding of the positive impact of exercise on mental health. While she has been fortunate not to face significant mental health challenges herself, she has witnessed the transformative power of sports and physical activity in supporting her close friends through difficult times. Sarah aims to contribute to the cause by fundraising for North Yorkshire Sport, enabling them to provide mental health awareness training to sports clubs and providers. Additionally, the funds will assist in supporting individuals in the county to become physically active as a means of managing their mental health.
Sarah extends an invitation to sponsors who wish to support her cause or join her on a run in the future. Embracing the unpredictable elements of nature, including mud, bogs, cows, and hills, Sarah promises a rewarding and adventurous experience. Ultimately, she believes that the sense of accomplishment and the positive impact on both physical and mental wellbeing are what truly matter.
By participating in the Great North Run and championing the importance of fitness and mental health, Sarah Small is not only inspiring her own children but also serving as a role model for others to lead active lives while balancing the demands of work and family.
Here at Swim England North East, we wish Sarah the very best of luck and we will be keeping you all a bi-weekly update on Sarah’s progression towards the GNR. If you would like to donate, please visit here.
